Classification of Fuel-based Outboard Engines

Outboard engines are widely used in fishing boats, recreational boats, commercial vessels, and government patrol operations. Mounted externally on the stern of a boat, an outboard motor combines the engine, gearbox, and propeller into one compact propulsion system.

Today, marine outboard engines are mainly divided into two major categories based on energy source:

In a direct injection outboard engine, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber instead of mixing with air through a carburetor.

Diesel Outboard Engines

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Outboard Engines

Many lakes, rivers, and protected waterways now enforce stricter emission regulations, encouraging the adoption of cleaner marine propulsion technologies.

Advantages of LPG Outboard Motors

Compared with traditional gasoline outboards, LPG-powered engines offer:

  • Cleaner combustion

  • Reduced environmental impact

  • Lower fuel contamination risks

In most cases, LPG outboard engines are modified versions of standard gasoline outboards, similar to LPG-converted automobiles.

Kerosene Outboard Engines

The primary advantage of a kerosene outboard engine is low operating cost.

Kerosene fuel is often less expensive and more accessible in some developing regions, making these engines attractive for budget-conscious users.

Characteristics of Kerosene Outboards

  • Simple engine structure

  • Affordable operation

However, kerosene engines also have significant drawbacks:

  • Higher emissions
