How to Winteriz Your Boat Engine: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Protect Your Outboard Motor

Why Winterizing Your Boat Engine Matters

When temperatures drop below freezing, even a small amount of residual water inside your outboard engine or gearcase can expand, causing cracked blocks, damaged seals, or broken housings.
❄️ A single freeze-related failure can cost over $1,000–$3,000 in repairs — but with proper winterization, you can prevent all of that.

Winterizing your boat engine isn’t just about survival through winter — it’s about extending engine life, maintaining performance, and protecting investment value.

Step 1️⃣ Freshwater Flush – Remove All Salt & Contaminants

Before storage, always flush the outboard engine using a fresh water source.

  • Use a flushing attachment or run the outboard in a flush tank with clean water for at least 5–10 minutes.

  • This process removes salt, sand, and debris that can corrode internal cooling passages.

Earrow’s outboard test line uses high-flow flushing systems, similar to what we recommend for all engine owners before winter storage.

Step 2️⃣ Empty Fuel Lines & Carburetors

With the engine running, disconnect the fuel line and let the motor run until it stalls.
This ensures that fuel doesn’t sit inside the carburetors or injectors, preventing:

  • Gum buildup

  • Clogged jets

  • Hard starting in spring

Step 3️⃣ Fog the Carburetor Intakes

Before the engine completely runs out of fuel, spray fogging oil directly into the carburetor throat.

  • This coats the internal metal surfaces and cylinder walls, preventing rust.

  • As the engine begins to run rough, give an extra dose of fogging oil for maximum coverage.

Recommended: Use marine-grade fogging oil or corrosion inhibitors like Yamalube, SeaFoam, or Earrow Marine Fog Oil.

Step 4️⃣ Drain Cooling Passages & Water Pump

After flushing:

  • Keep the motor upright and allow all residual water to drain through the pick-up holes.

  • Remove drain plugs if available (check your service manual).

  • “Bump” the starter once or twice to clear remaining water from the impeller housing.

Even small ice formations can damage the water pump or crack the lower unit housing.

Step 5️⃣ Protect the Cylinders & Spark Plugs

  • Remove spark plugs and spray fogging oil into each cylinder.

  • Manually rotate the flywheel several turns to distribute oil evenly.

  • Inspect spark plugs for wear, corrosion, and gap settings; replace if necessary.

At Earrow, we use high-durability spark plug sets compatible with Yamaha, Suzuki, and Tohatsu engines, ensuring long-term performance.

Step 6️⃣ Lubricate All Linkages & Moving Parts

Lubricate:

  • Throttle linkages

  • Shift linkages

  • Starter drive gears

Use marine grease to prevent corrosion and rust during storage. Be sure to also grease propeller shafts, as moisture can cause metal-to-metal bonding.

Step 7️⃣ Drain & Refill the Gearcase

Drain old gearcase oil completely and refill with new marine-grade lubricant.

  • This prevents condensation and corrosion inside the lower unit.

  • Always check for milky oil—a sign of water intrusion or damaged seals.

⚙️ Earrow’s outboard lower unit assemblies use precision-machined seals to minimize water ingress, ensuring your propeller shaft remains corrosion-free.

Step 8️⃣ Manage Fuel System & Stabilize Gasoline

If you plan to store with fuel, fill the tank to 95% and add a fuel stabilizer.

  • Reduces condensation inside the tank

  • Prevents ethanol-related phase separation

  • Keeps injectors clean

If possible, run the stabilized fuel through the system for a few minutes before shutdown.

Step 9️⃣ Inspect & Protect Propeller Shaft

  • Remove the propeller and clean the shaft thoroughly.

  • Apply marine grease to prevent corrosion or seizing.

  • Check for fishing line damage near the propeller seals.

Step Store the Engine Upright

Never lay your outboard on its side — it can cause trapped water to flow into exhaust or intake passages.
Store it upright on an engine stand, covered in a dry and ventilated space.

Final Winterizing Checklist ✅
